Building a Secure REST API with Rust and Actix-web

Introduction

#

Rust's memory safety guarantees make it an excellent choice for building secure web APIs. In this tutorial, we'll build a complete REST API using the Actix-web framework.

Setting Up the Project

#

First, create a new Rust project:

cargo new secure-api
cd secure-api

Adding Dependencies

#

Add these dependencies to your Cargo.toml:

[dependencies]
actix-web = "4"
serde = { version = "1", features = ["derive"] }
jsonwebtoken = "9"
bcrypt = "0.15"

Creating the Server

#

Here's our basic server setup with middleware:

use actix_web::{web, App, HttpServer, middleware};

#[actix_web::main]
async fn main() -> std::io::Result<()> {
    HttpServer::new(|| {
        App::new()
            .wrap(middleware::Logger::default())
            .route("/health", web::get().to(health_check))
    })
    .bind("127.0.0.1:8080")?
    .run()
    .await
}

JWT Authentication

#

Implementing JWT-based authentication ensures our API endpoints are secure. We use the jsonwebtoken crate for token generation and validation.

Rate Limiting

#

To prevent abuse, we implement rate limiting using a sliding window algorithm. This limits each IP to 100 requests per minute.

Conclusion

#

Rust's type system and ownership model help us build APIs that are both fast and secure by default. The Actix-web framework provides excellent performance while maintaining developer ergonomics.
